Matthiasstrasse residential building
This seven-storey apartment building marks a corner site in the densely built central-Berlin district of Friedrichshain. The building is adjacent to the listed Georgen parish cemetery with its beneficial park-like atmosphere. While the ground floor commercial spaces are given enclosure by the high cemetery wall, on the upper floors generously glazed loggias open up facing both south and west into the street. Thus the floor plans ensure that residents can both connect to the hustle and bustle of the street as well as enjoying green landscape views.
The design allows for a mixture of 1.5 room apartments and larger four room apartments. All units have balconies or terraces. The full-height glazing provides a generous sense of space, especially in combination with the attractive exterior.
The floor heights are legible on the façade and these, together with the continuous railings, give the house a strict horizontal articulation.
