The new sports hall in the Friedrichshagen district of South-East Berlin was completed in a very short planning and construction period of only 24 months, to replace an existing hall from the 1950s. The new sports hall offers competition-level facilities with three sports fields and a 160-seater telescoped viewing tribune.
The lightness of the reduced cubic building is achieved with a timber structure and a four-meter-high enclosing band of windows.
The base of the façade is clad in coloured tiles and, from afar, appears to mirror its context in a multitude of pixels.
Inside the hall natural materials create a warm and friendly atmosphere: in addition to the structural elements, the ceiling and walls are clad in timber (for example, the rebound wall is clad in maritime pine) and the floor is covered in linoleum.
